Email from Prof. Sudhir Raniwala on retirement of Dr. Jaswant Saini

Dear Dr. Jaswant Saini,

Heartiest congratulations on completing a milestone in life. There is very little that we can do where there is compulsory retirement at a given age.
What is important is what we do before we retire.

The idea in this mail originates from my understanding of the job of a University teacher and the culture that makes him/her.

While the primary job of a teacher is teaching and research, over the last many years, the focus has shifted to everything else other than teaching and research. I have heard people in our Department argue that other jobs are also University jobs, and hence are important. Unfortunately, I have never been able to appreciate that other jobs have the same importance as teaching and research. While the salary that we get for teaching and research is fixed, some other jobs do get us a lot without any decrease in salary.

What I like and admire about you is that you never compromised with academic ethics, teaching was always your priority, and you maintained this much required respect for your profession.
It is also important that you could do this even though there is a prevailing culture to which you could have succumbed to.  More importantly, the values that were practiced by other people within your research group, have been very different from the values practiced by you.

यह मेरे लिए गर्व का विषय है कि आप जैसे लोग इस विभाग मे थे | I have mentioned you to some of my colleagues and collaborators outside this University.  While I do not know anything about your research, I do know that you did very well as a teacher. My heartiest congratulation for being able to honour the commitment that we should all be doing.

With my best wishes for a happy retired life and with kind regards,

Sudhir Raniwala
